Oral piercings: Fabulous or Hazardous

Posted on 12/19/2022 by Oral and Facial Surgery Center
Oral piercings: Fabulous or HazardousAn oral piercing is usually a tiny hole through the surface of your cheek, lip, tongue, or the uvula (a tiny mass of tissue at the back end of your throat). An oral piercing is usually done for beauty purposes by wearing jewelry.

While it is a good way to express your sense of style, it can also be detrimental to your overall health. Your mouth is jam-packed with bacteria that can result in infection Oral piercings are therefore not considered safe and are generally not recommended by dentists. If you are still thinking about getting an oral piercing, it is critical that you lower your risk of infection by making sure the procedure is carried out in a clean environment by licensed piercers.

Health risks from oral piercings

There are a number of risks that anyone who gets oral piercings has to contend with. It is therefore important that you keep some of these in mind even as you plan to go in for the procedure. They include:
The risk of infection: Oral piercings carry an increased risk of infection as your mouth is covered in bacteria, even if you have good oral health. Coming into contact with jewelry also increases your risk for infection. It is good practice for you to wash your hands before touching any oral piercings.

Sustained bleeding: If a blood vessel is damaged during your procedure, the mouth can bleed, and this blood flow can be tricky to contain depending on what type of blood vessel has been damaged. The puncturing aspect of getting oral piercings increases the chance of heavy bleeding.

Pain and inflammation: This is a common occurrence when you get oral piercings. However, you should know that an extreme case of pain and inflammation of the tongue can block the airway and make breathing more difficult. If your tongue is swollen and does not get better in a couple of days, contact a doctor immediately. Reach out to us for more information on this, or any other dental health concern.
