:What We Can Do if You Have Chronic Sinus Pain

Posted on 12/7/2020 by Dr. Harold D. Kennedy
:What We Can Do if You Have Chronic Sinus PainChronic sinus pain is medically known as rhinosinusitis. It is a prolonged inflammation that affects the sinuses. This problem starts when cavities in your head and nose (sinuses) become swollen or inflamed for at least three months despite the treatment. Chronic sinus pain can interfere with the normal flow of mucus, making your nasal cavity stuffy. It can also make breathing through the nose difficult. In extreme cases, this condition can cause the area around the eyes to feel tender or swollen.

Symptoms Chronic Sinus

Look out for common symptoms associated with chronic sinusitis before you come to see us. The symptoms may include nasal inflammation, thick, discolored discharge from your nose, drainage down the throat, nasal obstruction pain, swelling around your cheeks, eyes, forehead, and nose, and a reduced sense of taste or smell. Other symptoms can include ear pain, bad breath, fatigue, pain in your upper jaw, cough, throat clearing, toothache, and sore throat. Once you notice these signs, you can schedule an appointment with us for diagnosis and treatment. The diagnosis will entail imaging tests, examining your sinuses, performing an allergy test, and taking samples from your sinus discharge to determine the cause of pain.

The Treatment

Our treatment will resort to prescribing over-the-counter medications to help relieve pain and infection symptoms. OTC medications can offer a short term solution to this problem. Most of these medicines contain decongestants and antihistamines, which also control allergies that contribute to sinusitis. Apart from that, we can perform nasal irrigation to clear the sinuses of all discharge, flush allergens, and relieve dryness. Antibiotics will also come in to take care of your chronic sinus pain.

In case other treatment options don't work, we may apply endoscopic sinus surgery to clear the sinus passages. If you have questions about chronic sinusitis, call us or visit our office to find helpful answers.
