Could Jaw Reconstruction Surgery Provide You Pain Relief?
Posted on 6/7/2021 by Dr. Harold D. Kennedy
Getting a jaw reconstruction surgery can improve your quality of life by giving you the comfort you need to eat and speak properly. This procedure also offers freedom from pain if you suffer from oral disorders such as bite problems and TMD. It is ideal where other orthodontic treatments cannot correct these problems.
Jaw Reconstruction Surgery and Pain Relief
Jaw pain could result from several underlying issues, warranting a jaw reconstruction surgery. For instance, if you have TMD, you may experience excessive wear and tear in the temporomandibular joints, causing inflammation. Surgery can correct the alignment of your jaws, reducing the strain; hence, the pain. Also, your pain could result from trauma or injury from an accident. If such an accident knocks and dislocates your jaws, it may not heal on its own, and a jaw reconstruction may be the only way to reset your jaw and relieve the pain. Besides pain relief, a jaw reconstruction surgery will improve your appearance, speech, and chewing capabilities.
What To Expect During a Jaw Reconstruction Surgery
A jaw reconstruction surgery can be lengthy and will require several trips to our office. We will start by aligning your teeth with braces for some months. We will then assess your facial structure and do some scans to create a surgical guide. After that, we will perform the surgery under full anesthesia, after which you will have to be admitted for about three days. We will do orthodontic tuning in the next few months to ensure a proper bite and jaw alignment. If you wore braces before treatment, we will recommend them for another six months after surgery; thereafter, give you retainers to maintain your teeth in position. However, if you do not wear braces, you will not need them. For more details on jaw reconstruction surgery, contact our office today.
