How Many Teeth Can Be Removed at Once?

Posted on 1/10/2022 by Oral and Facial Surgery Center
How Many Teeth Can Be Removed at Once?Tooth decay and other dental complications such as periodontal disease, crowding, and trauma can necessitate tooth extraction. Single tooth extraction is a common procedure; however, occasionally, you may have multiple tooth extractions. The procedure of pulling multiple teeth simultaneously is more complicated and requires careful evaluation of your oral health. You can live with one or two missing teeth without having major consequences, but when you have several teeth pulled at once, it requires a reshaping of the jawbone to prepare it for dental bridges or dentures.

No Clear Rule for Teeth Extractions

There is no set in the stone rule regarding the number of teeth you can safely have extracted in one sitting. Often, the answer as to how many teeth can be pulled during one visit depends on other situations, such as your oral health and the recommendations our oral surgeon provides. In some cases, you may have a full-mouth extraction if, for example, you have severe periodontal disease that causes excessive tooth decay as well as infection. Extracting the multiple teeth can help stop the decay or infection from causing more harm to your bone.

Complications for Tooth Extraction

Our oral surgeon can extract multiple teeth in one appointment that lasts a few hours. However, though rare, if complications arise, you may have the extraction spread over several appointments. During a tooth extraction, our surgeon tries to remove the teeth with forceps. In the event that there are broken, impacted, or other complications on the teeth, the surgeon may have to cut into the gums or jaw to remove the teeth safely. The surgeon will administer local anesthesia to help number the areas where the extraction is being done. For more extreme extraction where multiple teeth are to be pulled, IV sedation is used. If you have numerous teeth needing extraction, come to our dental office for evaluation. We may extract them in one single sitting or on different appointments.
