After oral and maxillofacial surgery, healing can occur quickly and without complications, if you follow proper guidelines. However, some risks might occur during recovery. For instance, you can have infections. The risk of infection can be increased by incidents such as smoking or placing foreign objects in the mouth. Learn more about how to care for the wound and prevent infection.
Wound Care after Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
After the first hours of oral and maxillofacial surgery, you will likely experience bleeding, pain, and swelling. While this is normal, there are ways to manage the conditions. For instance, in a case where bleeding is excessive, you are required to place a folded gauze pad over the wound and bite for about 30 minutes. Also, putting ice packs externally to the wound can help to control swelling.
After the swelling, bleeding, and discomfort stop, it is best to maintain proper hygiene to fasten healing. In addition to any prescribed mouthwash from your oral surgeon, you can consider using warm salt water to rinse your mouth. Any commercial mouthwash should be avoided since they contain alcohol which can irritate the wound. You can use any soft or post-surgical toothbrush. However, it is recommendable not to brush the surgical site directly, at least for the first week.
How to Prevent Infections
Continued swelling, pain, and foul smell indicate infection. Infection can delay healing. Hence, it is good to take the necessary measures to get rid of them soon. Good oral hygiene is a good way to avoid infections. Rinsing after every meal may help. Also, your oral surgeon may prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection. All oral and maxillofacial surgeries have risks of infections. Therefore, it is good to take the complete course of antibiotics to be on the safer side.
Focusing on postoperative care can make you recover quickly after oral and maxillofacial surgery. If your oral surgeon has scheduled an appointment for post-operative care, it is vital to return to the office as agreed.
